Lineal, a legal technology and services provider based in the US state of Missouri, is acquiring Forentec, a Swiss company specialising in eDiscovery, digital forensics, cybersecurity and OSINT. The news was reported by Startupticker.ch, based on a press release. The sources disclose neither the value of the transaction nor when it is expected to close.
Forentec, from digital forensics to OSINT
According to the press release, Forentec was founded in 2015 and is headquartered in Dübendorf. The company works for law firms, businesses, financial institutions, insurers and public authorities on complex investigations, litigation, cyber incidents and other matters where data carries significant weight. Having started out in digital forensics, it has grown into a multidisciplinary team that also covers eDiscovery, cybersecurity and OSINT.
Four disciplines, explained
These terms cover distinct activities, which often overlap within a single case.
Digital forensics involves identifying, preserving and analysing digital traces (computers, phones, servers, online accounts) in such a way that they remain usable as evidence. The key point is preservation: data copied or handled without proper method can lose its value in court. The press release specifically cites “the identification and preservation of digital evidence” among Forentec’s tasks.
eDiscovery refers to searching, sorting and producing electronic documents in the context of litigation or an investigation. When a case involves large volumes of emails and files, they must be filtered and then reviewed by lawyers: this is the “managed review” mentioned in the sources.
Cybersecurity, in Forentec’s case, includes incident response: stepping in after a cyberattack to understand what happened, limit the damage and document the facts.
OSINT (open-source intelligence) involves collecting and analysing publicly accessible information, such as registers, websites or social networks. The press release refers to “collecting and analysing intelligence from publicly available sources”.
What the acquisition changes, according to the two companies
According to the press release, the deal strengthens Lineal’s presence in Switzerland and broadens its capabilities in digital investigations and cybersecurity. In one direction, Forentec’s expertise in cybersecurity, OSINT and digital forensics will be offered to Lineal’s clients worldwide. In the other, Forentec’s clients will gain access to Lineal’s broader offering in eDiscovery, investigations, managed review and artificial intelligence.
“Forentec brings Lineal far more than a new point on the map,” says Major Baisden, CEO of Lineal, who describes a team whose expertise spans areas increasingly tied to the problems his clients are already asking him to solve.
Forentec’s founder and Managing Partner, Lionel Bloch, is staying with the company and joining Lineal, alongside the existing team, to develop the cybersecurity and OSINT businesses globally. “We built Forentec around technical expertise, discretion and the ability to help our clients when the stakes are high,” he says. In his view, the integration makes it possible to preserve these strengths while giving clients access to a larger global organisation, more technology and expanded eDiscovery and review capabilities.
For clients in Switzerland
These points are statements by the two companies, not yet observable results. The sources do not say whether the Forentec brand will be retained, nor whether the terms of service or the location where data is processed will change for Swiss clients. Yet for lawyers, banks or authorities entrusting sensitive evidence to a provider, these are concrete questions to ask. What the sources do establish is the continuity of the team and its founder, and the announced access to a broader offering.
