Swiss biotech startup Topadur Pharma is receiving financial backing from DEBRA Research, a non-profit organisation dedicated to epidermolysis bullosa. According to the announcement reported by Startupticker.ch on 30 October 2026, the investment funds a preclinical programme against the dystrophic form of the disease. The amount has not been disclosed.
How much is DEBRA Research investing in Topadur?
The announcement does not put a figure on the deal. Nor does it say whether DEBRA Research receives shares in Topadur Pharma AG, or at what valuation. It only ties it to a specific preclinical programme.
A preclinical programme against dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa
Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) covers a group of rare genetic diseases that make the skin extremely fragile. Light friction is enough to cause blisters and wounds. The dystrophic form is among the most severe, according to the announcement.
The programme targets two related problems: poor wound healing and fibrosis, meaning the scar-like thickening of tissue. Topadur will test its molecule TOP-N53 and other small molecules from its DualTOP platform. The tests will be carried out in vitro and in animals, so ahead of any trial in patients with EB.
Two partners will conduct these studies with Topadur: the Medical Center of the University of Freiburg im Breisgau, in Germany, and the EB Research Institute in Salzburg, Austria.
TOP-N53, a molecule already tested in humans
The programme starts from a compound that has already cleared several stages. According to Topadur, TOP-N53 was well tolerated in a first-in-human phase 1 study, in which it increased local blood flow in the skin.
The molecule is now in phase 2a, an initial efficacy study in a small number of patients. The target indication is different: digital ulcers in systemic sclerosis, a rare autoimmune disease. On 9 September 2025, Topadur announced on the Swiss Biotech Association website the orphan drug designation granted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the US drug regulator. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) had already granted it.
This designation brings development incentives, including market exclusivity, according to the company. TOP-N53 combines two actions: it releases nitric oxide and inhibits phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). The aim is to improve blood flow and wound healing, through local application to the wound.
Topadur is no newcomer in Switzerland. Its profile on Startupticker.ch mentions an Innosuisse certificate, from the Swiss Innovation Agency, and five distinctions in the Top 100 Swiss Startup Award, from 2016 to 2020. Its CEO is Matthias Schäfer; its founder, Reto Naef, chaired the board of directors in September 2025.
What a non-profit investor brings
DEBRA Research is not a conventional venture capital fund. It is the research arm of DEBRA Austria, a patient organisation founded in 1995, according to a joint announcement with LEO Pharma dated 5 February 2025. It describes itself as a gGmbH, a non-profit limited company, and dates its announcements from Munich.
Its stated goal is to turn scientific discoveries into treatments for EB. To that end, it works with universities, biotechs, pharmaceutical groups and authorities. In February 2025, for example, it entered into a non-exclusive partnership with Danish group LEO Pharma, a dermatology specialist, to identify and accelerate new treatments.
For Topadur, the contribution goes beyond money, according to its CEO. "DEBRA Research brings deep expertise in EB and a strong understanding of patients' needs," says Matthias Schäfer. He sees this backing as a validation of the DualTOP platform for other diseases.
On the investor side, Hubert Trübel justifies the choice by the wish to go beyond simple wound care. The announcement presents him as CEO of ReadOn Therapeutics, a company spun out of DEBRA Research. In 2025, LEO Pharma referred to him as CEO of DEBRA Research.
Topadur compared with other funded Swiss biotechs
This kind of targeted backing stands apart from recent large funding rounds. To put the stages in context, our guide to raising funds as a Swiss startup details the stages and the players.
| Biotech | Type of funding | Amount disclosed | Stage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Topadur Pharma | Investment by a non-profit organisation, targeted at one programme | No | Preclinical for EB; phase 2a for scleroderma |
| Nouscom (Basel) | Series D | EUR 120 million (USD 135 million) | Registrational trial upcoming for NOUS-209 |
| Windward Bio (Basel) | Equity, then application to list on Nasdaq | Up to USD 365 million since January 2025 | Phase 2/3 for WIN378 |
Nouscom's Series D and Windward Bio's listing application are rounds led by investment funds. DEBRA Research's contribution comes earlier in development, on a single indication. The usual stages are described in our article on the seed round and Series A. Other cases appear in our startup funding rounds.
What we don't know yet
- The amount invested by DEBRA Research and its terms: Topadur has not disclosed them.
- The duration of the preclinical programme and when its first results are due.
- Whether a clinical trial in patients with dystrophic EB will follow: nothing has been announced.
