An incubator in French-speaking Switzerland supports a business project from the idea to its first customers: coaching, an office, sometimes initial funding. This overview covers five cantons, each with its own structures and conditions; the Jura is not included. In Geneva, the Geneva Foundation for Technological Innovation (FONGIT) takes deep tech projects based in the canton. In the canton of Vaud, EPFL Innovation Park and Y-Parc, the technology park in Yverdon-les-Bains, host startups linked to a higher education institution. Genilem coaches non-technological projects in both cantons. Fribourg, Neuchâtel and Valais have their own points of contact.
What does an incubator actually provide?
FONGIT details what an incubator provides in its FAQ: setting up the company, pitch, financial plan, fundraising strategy, coworking and equipped laboratories, experts in intellectual property and law.
Not all of them offer coaching, premises and funding at the same time. Genilem provides coaching first and foremost. Y-Parc focuses on premises. FONGIT combines all three, with a possible equity contribution.
Which incubator for a startup in Geneva?
FONGIT is the canton's long-established incubator. Founded in 1991, it is a private non-profit foundation supported by the State of Geneva. It says it supports more than 250 startups active in information and communication technologies, advanced engineering and life sciences.
Companies must be based in the canton of Geneva, and any relocation costs are borne by the company. The Startup Support programme has three phases: Innovation Initiation, Initial Support and Full Support. It is free, with no registration fee, and accepts projects at every stage, from a technical invention to a company that is already invoicing. Applications go through an online platform, with a mandatory pitch deck; pre-selection can take up to three weeks, after which an interview and the full committee make the decision.
On the money side, FONGIT says it can provide up to 150,000 francs per startup, in equity and services, paid in tranches according to milestones. It also makes available the FIF, the cantonal innovation support fund, with three instruments: FIF Grant, FIF Seed and FIF Growth. There is no obligation to remain in Geneva after the programme.
A dated example shows the upstream end of the pipeline. On 22 October 2026, the Proton Foundation, the Geneva technology company Sonar and FONGIT announced a commitment of 300,000 francs to launch Geneva Student Entrepreneurs, a club for student entrepreneurs. It is neither a funding round nor an incubator: it is the launch of an association, which is meant to steer mature projects towards incubation.
Genilem, the option for non-technological projects
Genilem, a non-profit association, was founded in 1995 together with the cantons, the chambers of commerce and the cantonal banks of Vaud and Geneva, according to the page the State of Geneva devotes to it.
Its niche sets it apart from FONGIT: three years of strategic coaching for innovative projects, but with non-technological innovation. It also offers a diagnosis before start-up and training courses. Again according to the State of Geneva, Genilem has supported more than 270 new companies during their first three years, with more than 3,000 jobs created.
Its entry criteria are listed on its website: a registered office in the canton of Vaud or Geneva, less than three years in existence, an innovation or a differentiating feature, job potential and ongoing sales prospecting. Applications start with a meeting with a coach, followed by four selection stages. The programme is free of charge for the companies selected.
Which incubator for a startup in the canton of Vaud?
Vaud has two main hubs, both linked to the academic world. EPFL Innovation Park, in Lausanne, offers several entry points, open for applications at any time with the possibility of joining every month:
- La Forge, at the heart of the park in Lausanne, for projects and very young companies of all kinds, with free access for six months to a year;
- Le Garage, in Ecublens, which rents out first premises for one year, renewable once, in deep tech, life sciences, biotech and cleantech;
- Trust Village, for cybersecurity and digital trust, in Prilly and Geneva, with a six-month lease renewable once.
The common condition: working, or intending to work, with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) or another Swiss higher education institution, university, faculty of medicine or engineering school.
In Yverdon-les-Bains, Y-Parc hosts Y-START, a public incubator that does not take an equity stake. According to its website, it accepts companies incorporated less than one year ago, registered or in the process of registering in the Vaud commercial register, active in medium or high technology and linked to a teaching and research institution. A committee decides on the basis of a written application and an oral presentation. Private modules start at 15 m², at 260 francs per m² per year all-inclusive; coworking is also possible. The contract runs for at least three months, then renews monthly, for two years at most.
And in Fribourg, Neuchâtel and Valais?
In Fribourg, Fri Up is the contact point for start-ups, funded by the canton and its partners. According to its website, it supports innovative start-ups with proven growth potential that are domiciled in the canton or plan to be. The first advisory meeting is free. Fri Up also points companies towards cantonal support, including up to 100,000 francs in cash from the Seed Capital Fribourg Foundation. The press release issued by the Economic Promotion of the canton of Fribourg on 24 September 2026 names the director of Fri Up, Yann Steulet, and the host sites: AgriCo, bluefactory, Le Vivier and the Marly Innovation Center.
In Neuchâtel, Microcity SA presents itself as the gateway to innovation in the canton. According to its mission page, it supports startups, SMEs and large companies from idea to market: access to technologies, funding, infrastructure and its innovation community.
In Valais, The Ark Foundation supports entrepreneurs, startup founders and researchers through personalised coaching and a network of experts, according to Idiap, the research institute in Martigny. According to the foundation, its incubator supported 34 start-ups in 2024 across nine sites, mainly in life sciences, energy and digitalisation; a start-up can stay for up to 40 months. The IdeArk technology site offers an incubation environment dedicated to artificial intelligence and information technology, for Idiap spin-offs as well as other startups.
What federal support comes on top of the incubator?
Innosuisse, the Swiss Innovation Agency, also funds startup coaching. Its Initial Coaching grants a voucher worth up to 10,000 francs, which can be used with accredited coaches for twelve months at most. An independent expert assesses the application, then the Innosuisse Innovation Council decides, generally within three to four weeks.
Initial Coaching ends with an evaluation report setting out milestones. It is the required step before applying for Core Coaching, with no guarantee of being admitted. The two schemes do not serve the same purpose: the incubator provides the local framework, while the Innosuisse voucher pays for an accredited coach.
Incubator, accelerator or innovation park: what is the difference?
The difference lies mainly in the duration and the company's stage. An incubator takes on a young project for a limited time: six months to a year at La Forge, one year renewable once at Le Garage, two years at most at Y-START, 40 months at most at The Ark, three years of coaching at Genilem.
An innovation park, on the other hand, hosts companies of all sizes over the long term. EPFL Innovation Park also hosts SMEs and large groups, and rents offices on flexible leases to growing startups.
The term accelerator tends to refer to a programme for an already incorporated company that wants to grow. In practice, the boundary shifts: Genilem calls its coaching an "acceleration programme", and FONGIT says it wants to "accelerate innovation at all stages of maturity", from the idea to an already incorporated deep tech project.
