What the week says about trends
Price increases are accelerating, but their source remains narrow. Inflation rose from 1.0% to 1.5% in one month, while core inflation remains at 0.5%. According to the economist Arthur Jurus, of the financial group ODDO BHF, petroleum products account for 2.1% of the basket but explain nearly 85% of the monthly rise in the index.
Readings diverge on the future path of interest rates. The BAK Economics institute and Raiffeisen's economists consider a rise possible as early as 10 December 2026, the date of the SNB's next assessment. Banque Migros and ODDO BHF expect it rather in 2027. Among the analysts surveyed by UBS and CFA Society Switzerland, 45% forecast a rate rise in the short term, compared with one in three a month earlier.
Business sentiment and analyst sentiment are at odds. The chief financial officers surveyed by Deloitte judge their own sales first: 62% forecast an increase in their turnover. Financial analysts look at the economy as a whole, and their barometer is tipping into negative territory. Neither survey measures actual activity.
A weaker franc can be read in several of the week's figures. It drove the SNB's exchange rate gains, according to finews.ch. According to AFP, the rise in inflation since the summer is due to tensions over oil, but also to the franc's decline against the dollar. The KOF is also counting on it to keep Swiss holidaymakers in the country this winter. In October, on the other hand, the franc appreciated against the euro, and the effect of this movement on the SNB's result has not yet been quantified.
UBS is earning more, but the debate over its capital requirements remains open. Its pre-tax profit is up 27% year on year. The SNB, for its part, added around 19 billion francs in the third quarter, for a provisional profit of 44.2 billion over nine months. The National Council has yet to decide on the capital coverage of UBS's foreign subsidiaries.
In crypto and cybersecurity, the highest amounts often come from the companies affected, from hackers or from analytics firms. The Binance figure is the platform's own; the Swiss Basketball figure comes from files claimed by a hacker. Among these cases, only the canton of Vaud itself quantifies the people affected.
The previous week, employment dominated the barometer, with the 15,000 bankruptcies forecast by Allianz Trade for 2026 and the 358 jobs cut by Sunrise. These figures appear in the figures of the week to 28 October. The economic context is detailed in our article on the growth of the Swiss economy.
